Filled with delicious recipes, beautiful art and photography by our congregation, Entertaining Strangers is a funbdraiser for the church. Designed by members of the church, all profits from the cookbook go towards keeping the church open so we can continue our tradition of feeding the hungry each Sunday - hungry souls and hungry bellies, with our free community supper.

From the Introduction:

For the past ten years, Emmanuel Howard Park United Church (EHP) has welcomed, nourished and entertained anyone who has walked through its doors. The philosophy is simple – we welcome all. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, what you believe or who you love – you’re welcome here. We call it radical hospitality. It has made our church a wonderful gathering of strangers who have become friends.

In these pages you will find recipes from the people who worship and work in this church. Our church is no different from many others – we serve coffee and dessert after services, we hold potluck dinners, and a free community supper for the poor and homeless each Sunday. The importance of a shared meal is well known in the bible – it is often the turning point in the key stories, where strangers become allies and friends. This cookbook is an honouring of that tradition.

Proceeds from the sale of this book will be given to the church so we can keep feeding the souls and bodies of those who walk in the doors.
In addition to the recipes you will find a selection of the welcoming messages delivered by members of our congregation at the beginning of the service. These messages explain some of the reasons why people come to this church and why they stay.

The title was inspired by the late Jim Doyle. Over the years, Jim helped feed thousands of strangers at EHP’s free evening supper. His favourite passage was Hebrews 13:2 “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.” It is our hope this book will help many of you do the same.
